On 12 October 2015 the new TV Sports Awards took place at the Monaco Yacht Club and 5 Star Active Ambassador Rio Ferdinand received an award recognising his work with young people.
Hosted by Guido Bagatta and Sky Sports News presenter Kate Abdo, the event presented awards across five categories; Best Sports Broadcaster, Best Live Event Coverage, Best Digital Project, Best TV Rights Deal and Media Executive of the Year.
The special Play for Change award recognised a top-class athlete who is responsible for extraordinary social responsibility work through supporting funding and advocating worthy campaigns,
initiatives and projects for vulnerable children through sports. The award was presented to Rio Ferdinand to recognise his contribution in creating, 5 Star Active partner, the Rio Ferdinand Foundation which engages and supports young people in disadvantaged communities through positive activities, mentoring, training and development of skills for employment and business.
Other victors on the night included digital consultants Omnigon, picking up the award for Best Digital Media Project for the official mobile app for the Rugby World Cup 2015and the Amaury Sport Organisation, who were recognised for Bes Live Event Coverage for their TV production of the Tour de France.
Rio Ferdinand, Founder and Trustee of the Rio Ferdinand Foundation, said:
“I feel really proud my Foundation have gotten this recognition. I always said if I hadn’t been a footballer I’d have become a youth worker so it’s great to be doing this too. Loads of young people have achieved through my Foundation. They’ve become people who are now looked up to in their communities rather than as someone who had lost their way so I’m proud of them too and it’s really rewarding and great to give something back”
